#1 The Superstition Mountains

OK, here we are, two 50+ guys (Dennis Woods & Mike Walsh) that worked together years ago, back together trying to show how manly we are by driving around the Arizona mountains. Of course our main goal is to get away from our work and civilization, have some fun, a couple of beers, a cigar or 2, and not kill ourselves in the process. So far, so good.

Our first adventure was to the Superstition Mountains, east of Phoenix and about 12 miles south east of Apache Junction, 09.22.07.

Trip: We got off highway 60 at Queen Valley road then to dirt road 172. It was a nice morning, sunny and about 75 degrees. The road was well maintained most of the way. I'm guessing by the map scale the whole trip off road was about 18 miles and driving an average speed of probably about 15 mph. We experienced quite a bit of elevation and temperature changes from the beginning, about 1730 ft. to some where around 4200 ft then back down. At the highest point the temperature was a good 15 degrees cooler.

We drove across and in several dry creek beds along the way. All of them looked like the water moves through pretty quickly when they get enough rain fall and we would not be manly enough to attempt crossing.

About a mile or two from the end of our off road journey the skies looked threatening with lightning and rain. It eventually got us. We stopped and put the top up but the side and back windows were bake at home. It was really quite refreshing. We got a little wet and only a few clumps of mud flew off the tires and into the cab. Luckily the rain hadn't started earlier in our trip and when we got back on highway 60 we were headed away from the rain. We were back in dry sunny weather in less than 10 minutes. The entire trip took about 6 hours.

This was a perfect trip for two old guys on their maiden voyage. Enjoy the pictures. We'll back out again soon.
